Bogotá, October 15, 2015 (CD).
Open letter from Centro Democrático party to the Attorney General of the United States and other Ministers of Justice of the Americas gathered in Bogotá:
Unlike what the President of Colombia stated before you, the ugly truth is that there is political persecution by means of the Colombian legal system against the opposition, that is, our Centro Democrático party.
Actually, our members and leaders have been clumsily and cruelly persecuted by the Colombian Government in alliance with the Attorney General of Colombia, his judicial police, and several judges from the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia; this has been reported to international organizations such as the United Nations Human Rights Committee charged with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
Therefore, we kindly ask you not to be fooled by the current Colombian Government whose sole purpose is to destroy our political party in opposition, which has been proven by judicial nonsenses initiated against former president Álvaro Uribe and his family, our political party chairman Óscar Iván Zuluaga and his son David Zuluaga, former vice-president and current candidate running for mayor of Bogotá Francisco Santos, former presidential pre-candidate Luis Alfredo Ramos, and former ministers and officials Andrés Felipe Arias, Luis Alfonso Hoyos, Luis Carlos Restrepo, Diego Palacio, Sabas Pretelt, Alberto Velásquez, Bernardo Moreno, María del Pilar Hurtado, César Mauricio Velásquez, Edmundo del Castillo.
Once again we ask you not to be fooled by a president who is vindictively using Colombian justice system against those of us who opposed this Administration's purpose is to grant impunity for murders, kidnappings, crimes against humanity, and drug trafficking committed by FARC narcoterrorist group.
Lastly, we kindly ask you to preserve and strengthen international protection actions that safeguard those members and leaders of our party who were forced into exile due to the political and judicial persecution initiated by Juan Manuel Santos's Administration and a sector of the Colombian judicial branch.
The Centro Democrático party will deliver to U.S. Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch the documents by which court judgments are analyzed and persecution against our political party members is clearly proven.
This includes recordings illegally made by individuals not linked to former president Uribe's administration. Nevertheless, those recordings were used to sentence officials from former president Uribe's Administration despite that voices are clearly heard to be from judges ordering judicial actions against such officials, based on political views.
